Great Places to Play in Hilton Head |

In the Lowcountry, golf is not just a sport; it is a way of life. Golf legends have built some of the worlds most selective courses here, calling on their experiences from playing in the most exciting and challenging courses around the world, then implementing the water hazards, bunkers and roughs meant to leave each player with their own personal experience of play. On Callawassie Island, optimistic players have been stepping onto the Tom Fazio-designed 27-hole championship course for more than two decades. Whispers of its difficulty and rumors of unparalleled games have wafted through the golf communities. Recently, the course underwent a multi-million dollar renovation which included rebuilding the greens from scratch, using Mini-Verdi grass for surfacing that insures smoothest, truest putting year round and adding a technologically-advanced dual line watering system that uses 50 percent less water while keeping the lush landscape of Live Oaks, majestic Magnolia trees beautifully green. "Our goal was to provide members with a flashback to one of Tom Fazio's youthful, signature masterpieces," says Callawassie Island Club General Manager Brian LaSota. |

Another renowned course was designed by golfing great Greg Norman and sits overlooking the Okatie River. The award-winning 18-hole Greg Norman Signature Oldfield Golf Course is considered by many to be the finest in the area. Prior to creating it, Norman admitted, "We dream of getting a site like this one. And since this is our first course in the Lowcountry, we want to make it something special." "Our residents consider it to be exquisite golf," says Alice Beckish, Broker-in-Charge of Oldfield Plantation adding that Norman incorporated the natural lay of the land, creating its unique design out of it. Keeping to Norman's course philosophy, there are free form tee boxes with five sets of tees, four types of grass, large apron areas, sod-walled bunkers and small greens. |

Tradition National Golf Course, is Tom Fazio's newest course in the Lowcountry and incorporates the natural landscape of lakes and wetlands throughout. The Par 72 course offers four sets of tees extending to 7300 yards with multiple pin positions, challenging bunkers and comfortable fairways. Also featured is a 6-hold chipping/short course with holes ranging from 70-180 years and a double-ended practice area with bunkers, putting and chipping greens. Golf in the Lowcountry is distinct and no two games are played the same. In addition to the brilliance of each architect's designs, the natural landscape also must be incorporated into each player's strategy including the winds, the wildlife and even a few wandering gators.
